  • New Student Category
Students (those attending a bodywork certification class) often wondered how to list themselves, "Pro or Non-Pro?". Similarly our members we're unsure what category students were in. So to clear things up we've added Student as a new category. The three member profile categories are now:
    • PROFESSIONAL - Certified full or part-time therapists.
    • STUDENT - Those enrolled in a certification course.
    • NON-PROFESSOINAL - Those not in a certification track.

One may search by category and offer profile by category. For example, a PROFESSIONAL may wish to search out other PROFESSIONALS only while making theor profile avaulable to PROFEESIONALS and STUDENTS only.

    Portrait of a Massage Therapist
The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) conducted a survey of 800 massage professionals recently to profile today's massage therapist. Their findings:
    • 83% of practitioners are women with a median age of 40
    • The median household income is just under $50,000, with one-third of the income supplied from the massage practice
    • The average therapist works 16 hours per week:
      • full-time therapists work 24 hours per week
      • part-time therapists work 10 hours per week
    • Where therapists work:
      • 42% work out of their own or their clients home
      • 29% work in a spa or gym
      • 24% work in a private practice office
      • 19% work in a medical office
    • 62% of therapists are self-employed
    • The average length of practice is 4.1 years, and the average time survey participants reported being in their current positions was slightly under 4 years
    • 81% transitioned from another career prior to entering the massage profession
    • Most therapists stated that their profession was personally rewarding.

    Hints
    • Update your profile every so often to make sure it's correct and so that other members see that you're current... doing so changes the "Last updated" date at the bottom of your profile.
    • Profile hidden? Other members won't find you if you're unplugged! If you're interested in networking keep it visible!
    • A photo is a friendly start. Did you know that 8 out of 10 are reluctant to contact members without photos? Avoid "fear of the unknown" and post your photo. A photo in your office adds credibility too. [See our free photo service.]
