I think that receiving a good massage is the ultimate in total ("selfish") relaxation, but am usually on the giving end (which for me is equally selfishly enjoyable). Over the years, I have experienced many techniques and modalities, including Esalen and Thai (real nonsexual Thai) massage, as well as SOMA and Reiki bodywork. Esalen massges are my favorite, as I find them to be the most complete on several levels, and incorporate the best of deep and superficial techniques. I've never had any real training, as its very hard to find people willing to teach someone who will not be working at it later, and as a very busy traveling professional, I just do not have consistent time to even consider a program. As hard as it is to do, I always try to stay focused enough during my massages so that I can ask questions about the therapist is doing, or at least to try to visualize what they are doing so I can incorporate it into the massages I give my wife a few times a week.
