I began learning massage techniques when I was in a committed relationship with a former partner who suffered from ankylosing spondylitis (AS) a type of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects a person's' spine. Symptom include pain and stiffness in the vertebrae and joints along the spine and pelvis. Over time, vertebrae fuse together, causing a hunched posture and limiting mobility. It can also affect other joints like the hips and shoulders, and in some cases, other parts of the body. I was taught by the patient (my girlfriend) and went with her to clinic where I was unofficially trained to properly administer gentle, broad strokes where needed making sure to identify the position of the spine in order to avoid direct pressure on the spine. Therefore my massage techniques center around gentle but firm hand applications to improve muscle relaxation and flexibility without aggravating or stressing an individual's back.
